MEASURE FAQ's
Measures
All door installation projects, except storm doors, require a measure to be completed prior to purchasing any product or an installation through The Home Depot.
While you can purchase a storm door and an installation for your storm door without a measure, we recommend a measure for every door to ensure a perfect fit every time with no surprises.
Storm doors ordered with no measure may require extra work and therefore incur additional unforseen charges that could have been caught at the time of a measure.
Storm doors that are special ordered and are the wrong size or handing are generally not returnable or require a restocking fee.
If you did not have a measure done and there are underlying issues that prevent your door from being installed on your scheduled install date, a Lost Day fee may be required
* Make sure someone 18yrs or older is on site for the measure appointment and is well informed on what is to be measured
*Please give the Measure Tech personal space to conduct their measure of your doors. It is understandable that you may have questions about your project and we certainly want to answer as many of those questions for you as we can but please wait until the the end of the measure to ask all of these questions so that the Measure Tech doesn't become distracted and possibly forget an important detail. If possible, write all of your questions down in a notebook and have the Measure Tech go through them with you once all measurements are completed
* Make sure that the area around the door(s) to be measured is free from clutter and accessible to the measure tech
* Make sure children and pets are away from the area where the measure tech will need to access to complete their measurements
*If it is Spring/Summer, please make sure the grass is mowed and that there are no tree/bushes overgrown in the area of the install. Our installers will not wade through tall grass or fight bushes to complete your measure
* If it is Winter, make sure that a clear path is available for the measure tech to access your doors. If icy, make sure sand or ice melt has been put down for safety
* If you have pets, PLEASE make sure that all pet waste is cleaned up in areas where the measure tech may need to go. If pet waste isn't cleaned up in an area, the measure tech will not be able to measure there for health and safety reasons
* Please be sure to keep your appointment. Failure to do so may result in a missed appointment fee
* Be aware that the best way for us to get accurate measurements for your replacement door(s) is to measure the rough opening. In order to do this for Entry, Patio, and Interior Pre-hung doors the measure tech will need to remove the trim on one side of the door to expose the structural framing(studs). In cases where houses are old or many layers of paint are present there is the possibility that the trim could crack or break. Typically this isn't an issue as the trim will be replaced when the new install occurs. However, if the trim does crack/break during the measure process and you then decide not to proceed with the installation of a new door in that location, Chip-N-Nail will not be responsible for replacement of that trim. You can refuse trim removal at the time of the measure and the measure tech will use alternative methods to determine the opening size. These methods are less accurate and because it is not the preferred method, you will assume all responsibility for discrepancies between the measured opening size and the real opening size that may arise and additional costs may be incurred
* Go into a The Home Depot store in your area, sit with a Millwork Associate, explain to them what you are looking to have done, and purchase a measure
* Once your measure is purchased, it will be sent to Chip-N-Nail (CNN) electronically
* Once your measure is received by CNN one of our Measure Techs will call you to set up an appointment to come to your home and measure your door(s). Measure Techs cover certain areas at certain times of the week and will try to make the most convenient appt for you they can within their coverage time of your area
*After the Measure Tech has come to your home and taken all of the necessary measurements, they will send the results to CNN for processing. Please be aware that our Measure Techs are on the road most of the day conducting measures. CNN will not receive your measure results from the Measure Tech until the day after they have come to your home
*Once CNN receives your results from the Measure Tech, we will type them up in a neat, easy to read format, verify all information, review the pictures sent by the Measure Tech, review any work required that is not part of the basic installation, and send that information to The Home Depot. We try very hard to get all measures into The Home Depot within 24 hours, however, large measures with multiple doors can take a few days. Weekends and Holidays do not count
* The Home Depot should contact you within 24 business hours after receiving the results back from CNN and ask you to come in and go over your project
*If you have any questions about your measure, please call the CNN office and we'll be happy to help
When CNN comes to your home to conduct a measure, first and foremost we are measuring for a "Direct Replacement" of what you have existing. Direct Replacement means that we are looking to get the same size and configuration as the existing door
In some instances, you may be looking to change to something different. If CNN can make this happen without structural work having to be done, in most cases it won't be an issue. Working closely with the Millwork Associate assigned to your order and our office staff, we will find a door best suited to your opening and your desired design tastes.
